Once Upon an Alphabet by Oliver Jeffers: Short Stories

Once Upon an Alphabet

Once upon a time, in a small village called Alphabetville, there lived a group of 26 friends. Each friend had a unique name, starting from A to Z. They loved to play and explore together, and their favorite game was to find words that started with their own letter.

One sunny morning, as the friends gathered in the village square, they noticed a mysterious letter floating down from the sky. It was a letter they had never seen before, and it landed right in front of them. The friends were curious and excited to find out what it meant.

The letter was an invitation from the Alphabet King, who ruled over all the letters in the land. He had heard about the friends’ love for words and wanted to challenge them to a special quest. The quest was to find an object that started with each of their letters and bring it back to the Alphabet Castle.

The friends were thrilled and immediately set off on their adventure. They split into pairs, each pair searching for an object that started with their assigned letter. Adam and Amelia, the first pair, found an apple tree in the nearby orchard. They carefully picked the juiciest apple and placed it in their basket.

Next, Ben and Bella discovered a beautiful butterfly fluttering in the garden. They gently caught it and placed it in a jar, making sure to poke holes for air. The butterfly happily flapped its wings, excited to be part of the quest.

Caleb and Chloe stumbled upon a cozy cottage, where they found a colorful cat named Cleo. Cleo happily joined their group, purring with delight. Daniel and Daisy found a dusty old book in the village library, filled with fascinating stories waiting to be read.

As the friends continued their search, they encountered various challenges and obstacles. Ethan and Emily had to climb a tall mountain to find an eagle’s nest, while Felix and Fiona had to dive deep into the ocean to find a friendly fish named Freddie.

Gavin and Grace discovered a hidden garden filled with gorgeous flowers, and they carefully plucked a daisy to add to their collection. Henry and Hannah stumbled upon a hidden treasure chest, filled with gold coins and jewels.

The friends continued their quest, each finding an object that started with their assigned letter. They faced their fears, solved puzzles, and helped each other along the way. Finally, they all gathered at the Alphabet Castle, where the Alphabet King awaited their arrival.

The Alphabet King was impressed by their determination and teamwork. He praised each friend for their unique contribution and rewarded them with a special gift. He also thanked them for reminding him of the power of words and the joy they bring.

From that day forward, the friends of Alphabetville were known as the Alphabet Heroes. They continued to explore, play, and create words together, spreading happiness and knowledge throughout the land.

And so, the Alphabet Heroes lived happily ever after, always remembering the magical quest that brought them together and the power of words that connected them all.
